  1. An interesting article in our member forum worth reading is, Specialized Pro-resolving Mediators for Rosacea?
  2. Lipoxygenase image courtesy of Wikimedia Commons In an article published in National Geographic, a new approach is discussed to treating inflammatory diseases (one theory is that rosacea is an inflammatory disease) using Specialized Pro-resolving Mediators (SPM) which were discovered in the 1990s by Charles Serhan, a professor of anesthesia at Harvard Medical School. [1] Prominent SMP members include the resolvins and protectins. [2] "SPM join the long list of other physiological agents which tend to limit inflammation (see Inflammation § Resolution) including glucocorticoids, interleukin 10 (an anti-inflammatory cytokine), interleukin 1 receptor antagonist (an inhibitor of the action of pro-inflammatory cytokine, interleukin 1), annexin A1 (an inhibitor of formation of pro-inflammatory metabolites of polyunsaturated fatty acids), and the gaseous resolvins, carbon monoxide (see Carbon monoxide § Physiology), nitric oxide (see Nitric oxide § Biological functions), and hydrogen sulfide (see Hydrogen sulfide § Function in the body and Hydrogen sulfide § Involvement in diseases)." [2] The cytokines mentioned above are related to the Immune System Disorder theory of rosacea. [3] Serhan was searching for fatty lipid molecules when he identified lipoxin that seemed to reduce inflammation. "Scientists speculate that one way lipoxins and other pro-resolution molecules work is by interacting with immune cells called macrophages." [1] "A lipoxin (LX or Lx), an acronym for lipoxygenase interaction product, is a bioactive autacoid metabolite of arachidonic acid made by various cell types." [4] "SPMs are being tested extensively in animal models of diseases like cancer and sepsis, and more modestly in small patient trials studying eczema and periodontal disease." [1] Whether SMPs are ever being considered to treat rosacea remains to be seen. Could a non profit organization for rosacea patient advocacy like the RRDi engage in a small patient trial studying rosacea? Depends if you can get enough members to get together to sponsor such a trial. Learn more about rosacea research. End Notes [1] The end of inflammation? 6. If you have registered an account with the RRDi you probably are in the inactive member group. The definition of an inactive member is one who has not posted in the last thirty days. Beginning in February 2022 we have basically allowed guests and inactive members to view about 5% of our website. We now have switched to a subscription based website so that active members can view the entire website if they donated $1/month. We have had to do this to assure we can continue to publish this website though Invision Community hosting services. If we don't have enough paid subscriptions to keep our non profit organization functioning through this website we will deem this to mean not enough rosaceans want to keep this going and simply shut down. Another option to become an active member who does NOT want to post is simply donate $12 and we will note this on your registered account and you will gain 12 months of full access to the site. If you are having any issues logging into your account, use our contact form and give us your email address you used to register your account and we can help you login by resetting your password. If you have any questions about any of this, find the reply to this topic button and post.
  7. "Natural coumarins present in a variety of foods and herbs are a class of chemically diverse compounds with important biological effects, useful for health promotion and the prevention of various diseases. The most important adverse effects of coumarins are represented by hepatotoxicity favored by the ingestion of large doses and possible genetic polymorphism of CYP2A6 and dermatological phototoxic reactions. A better understanding of the safety profile of coumarins present in nutraceuticals is necessary for a safer use of these valuable natural compounds." Front Pharmacol. 2022; 13: 803338. 12. "Dermatophytes (from Greek δέρμα derma "skin" (GEN δέρματος dermatos) and φυτόν phyton "plant") are a common label for a group of fungus of Arthrodermataceae that commonly causes skin disease in animals and humans. Traditionally, these anamorphic (asexual or imperfect fungi) mold genera are: Microsporum, Epidermophyton and Trichophyton. There are about 40 species in these three genera.." [1] 'Dermatophytoses are superficial fungal infections caused by dermatophytes affecting the skin, hair and/or nails. They are also termed as tinea infections. Dermatophytes are filamentous fungi that invade and feed on keratinized tissue like skin, hair and nails, causing an infection." [2] 'Topical anti-fungal therapy forms the mainstay of treatment in localized and naive dermatophytic infections. Topical anti-fungal agents are recommended for dermatophytoses affecting skin and presenting as localized infections. Systemic drugs are indicated for more extensive infections." [2] "In addition to causing symptomatic infections with different severity degrees, dermatophytes also colonize 30%–70% of the human population without causing clinical disease, thus these keratin parasites could be considered as a component of the human microbiota. Strikingly, the presence of dermatophyte in the skin, either in commensal or pathogenic relationship with susceptible hosts, has been related to asthma, allergy or eczematous skin." [3] "Successful treatment of these conditions depends first on accurate diagnosis, which is often quickly accomplished with a KOH examination." [4] "Diagnosis can be confirmed by direct microscopic examination with a potassium hydroxide preparation or by culture with the dermatophyte test medium." [5] "Dermatophyte infections can be readily diagnosed based on the history, physical examination, and potassium hydroxide (KOH) microscopy. Diagnosis occasionally requires Wood's lamp examination and fungal culture or histologic examination." [6] End Notes [1] Dermatophytes, Wikipedia [2] J Fungi (Basel). 2022 Jan; 8(1): 39. 13. "Several compounds present in plants have been shown to have positive effects on skin health as well as photoprotective properties. It has been shown that several classes of secondary metabolites, such as alkaloids, carotenoids and phenolic compounds, provide protection against UVR damage in the skin. These compounds can absorb UVR, block it and stop the mechanisms by which UVR damages the skin. Mexican plant biodiversity is a valuable source of secondary metabolites with photoprotective effects. Several Mexican plants produce unique molecules or mixtures with significant antioxidant and photoprotection properties. Due to their outstanding mechanisms of action, crude plant extracts, isolated compounds from plants or mixtures could all be potential ingredients in a new generation of sunscreens. In addition to their strong antioxidant and photoprotective properties, they also prevent photoaging and skin cancers. Furthermore, most of them have little to no side effects, making them a safe option for sunscreens." Plants (Basel). 2022 Jan; 11(2): 220. 14. If you noted the statement in the abstract above which is reproduced for you here: "A still unanswered question is whether improper formulations could also prove to be counterproductive in other types of sensitive skin, such as rosacea." It is interesting to note a related abstract on the "clinical evidence about objective advantages of skincare routine remains limited despite advertising often claims benefits" and engaging in clinical tests on the skin using tools to collect data on this subject. 15. Liposomated means "incorporated into liposomes" according to Wiktionary and Wordsense. Liposome is "an aqueous compartment enclosed by a bimolecular membrane, typically of phospholipid; a lipid vesicle." The Visioscan® VC 20 plus is a unique UVA-light video camera with high resolution to study the skin surface directly. More Info. The above report mentions that "clinical evidence about objective advantages of skincare routine remains limited despite advertising often claims benefits." Two of the authors of the paper are affiliated with Nanovex Biotechnologies, Asturias, Spain which according to its website "works in the design and development of different nanovesicles to encapsulate different compounds.' The other two authors of the paper are associated with Clinica Dermatologica Internacional, Madrid, Spain. Wouldn't it be novel for the RRDi to independently sponsor a paper like this to evaluate skincare routines using similar equipment conducted by independent clinicians that are not affiliated with the skin industry? Would you help in sponsoring such a study? If enough members of the RRDi got together and decided this is what needs to be done it would take about $10K. The RRDi has currently 1600 plus members which would mean that each member would need to contribute $6.25 (less than a meal at a fast food chain). Can you see how a non profit organization has power if the members simply got together and decided to do something. What about you? Can you find the reply to this post button and make a comment about this?

  17. Just an update on our financial situation. Since Invision Community has raised the price of hosting our website on their servers from $30/month to $49/month we won't be able to keep the website going in about a year. If you appreciate all the videos and content on our website, we rely totally on the public for donations since we have appealed to the skin industry for donations which hasn't worked. We have appealed on our website for our members who number now over 1600 plus and we rarely if ever get donations from a member, we will simply have to close down the website if we do not receive donations to cover our expenses, particularly our hosting fee for the website. No one at the RRDi staff receives a dime since all are volunteer. Our funds are low and we are very transparent when it comes to our financial situation. If you have any questions or concerns why not reply to this thread as a guest and post?
  18. "The digital divide refers to the gap between those who benefit from the Digital Age and those who do not.[1][2] People without access to the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICTs) are put at a socio-economic disadvantage, as they are unable or less able to obtain digital information, shop online, participate democratically, or learn and offer skills. This resulted in programs to give computers and related services to people without access" [1] A paper in China reviews data how the covid pandemic increased the digital divide using a cosmetic course at the center of the study.
