Copied over from old RRDi Forum Apr 2006 written by adyus:

Hey there guys. Probably the employees who read such letters have the question "what's in it for my company?" embedded in their little heads and this is all they think about after thery read the words "donation" or "money". I think that just adding a link to the company's site isn't enough.

I think it would be better to present the marketing(like free publicity) possibilites for their companies. We should underline that we have direct contact with the largest 2 rosacea discussion boards with 7000+ members.

Eventually, we could also offer to list their products with brief descriptions on a section of the website.

I also think that companies usually donate for Awareness campaigns. This is a sort of free publicity for them, done through a respectable non-profit. Maybe we should state that money will be used for awareness campaigns and research?

I'll post some more thoughts tomorrow. What do you think?

Regards,

Adrian

The above posts were made in the old RRDi Forum and I simply copied them over to the new RRDi Forum. Although a little labour intensive, this seemed the best way to go about keeping all info in one place.

So, from here on out, I hope I won't have to pack up and move again, as I'm not good at moving (even on-line)! LOL

Will get back to the heart of the Funding Committee issues at hand when I have finshed copying all posts over (plus a holiday away from home - and my computer - for ANZAC day coming up soon).

Ok, I have deliberated over this for quite some time now and I guess at minimum we should send out some initial letters to see what sort of response we might get back. Here is the final letter I will send:

Hello «Title» «LastName»

I’m very excited to tell you a little bit about the RRDi in this letter and trust that you will also consider this a worthy project.

Who is the RRDi and what do we do?

The Rosacea Research & Development Institute (RRDi) is the first 501 © (3) Non Profit Corporation, established June 7, 2004 in the State of Hawaii, USA for the purpose of researching Rosacea. Established by volunteer Rosaceans, which is the force that drives the organization and is the integral spirit of the RRDi philosophy.

Why are we writing to you?

As a volunteer of the RRDi, I have been given the task of seeking donations for our research on Rosacea and ask that you consider donating to the RRDi. All donations to the RRDi are tax deductible.

What will be researched?

The Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) of the RRDi will advise the Board of Directors on what Rosacea research the RRDi should undertake. We are proud to have the following members on our MAC, who volunteer their time to the RRDi:

¬? Dr Sandra Lora Cremers MD FACS (Faculty Instructor in Ophthalmology, Harvard University)

¬? Dr Peter Crouch MD (UK General Practitioner & Laser Medicine Specialist)

¬? Dr Robert Latkany MD (Ocular Surface Specialist, Ophthalmologist)

¬? Dr Scheffer C G Tseng MD PhD (Director, Ocular Surface Center; Medical Director, Ocular Surface Research & Education Foundation; Director, R & D Department, TissueTech, Inc.)

¬? Dr Andrzej Wedrychowski PhD (Clinical Research Scientist; Biochemist, who is looking to change the human immune system)

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic disorder that develops gradually and is characterized by blushing, flushing, facial redness, papules and pustules, red gritty eyes, burning/stinging and in some advanced cases, a disfiguring bulbous nose. The disorder can be confused with and co-exist with Acne Vulgaris and/or Seborrheic Dermatitis. Men and women of all ages can be affected, with over 14 million diagnosed cases of Rosacea in the United States alone.

What’s in it for your company?

A substantial donation to the RRDi will generate a link from the RRDi web site to your web site, acknowledging your donation.

What to do next

Donate, of course! That’s the purpose of this letter. We need your donation to fund our research.

As the RRDi consists of a team of volunteers from all corners of the globe, e-mail contact would be preferred, otherwise, if a physical postal reply is to be sent, please reply to Cathy Rupert – Treasurer, as listed at the top of this letter.

We look forward to hearing back from you soon.

Now, I am not exactly sure what to say in the "What's in it for your company?" section. If we do provide a link, we need to change what is written in the RRDi web site about not hosting any sponsor links. Can't recall where that is right now. It's late and I need sleep but wanted to make a move on this.

Please, input would be appreciated!

Jenny,

Looks great. We can put up a 'donors' page and list who donates with a link to their web site if they want it. As you may already know, many non profits acknowledge their sponsors. I think your letter is fine.

Hi Adrian

I decided to send the letters out as above, to at least get the RRDi name out there. If nothing comes back, other than a standard NO reply, then we can re-think the approach.

I like the idea of throwing in the FACT that we are in direct contact with the largest on-line Rosacean discussion groups, hence marketing opportunities for those companies is pretty much as good as it gets! This can go back in reply to any of the companies who answer our letter with queries.

An awareness campaign would also be a good idea and I imagine that with the amount of Rosacans we 'know', we could get a brochure printed on volunteer power. I already have a draft! Distribution could be done on a user pays system. For example, a surgery requests 100 brochures through the RRDi web site. Cost will be the postage to where they are. Therefore, no cost to the RRDi. Just a thought.

We could also send separate letters out specifically asking for donations for an awareness campaign. This would then not detract from majority of funds being used for research. That is, donation received for awareness campaign and used for awareness campaign. Hope you understand where I am coming from with this.

Jenny

P.S. I don't know why the 'quote' button doesn't work for me!
