  1. "Dermatophytes (from Greek δέρμα derma "skin" (GEN δέρματος dermatos) and φυτόν phyton "plant") are a common label for a group of fungus of Arthrodermataceae that commonly causes skin disease in animals and humans. Traditionally, these anamorphic (asexual or imperfect fungi) mold genera are: Microsporum, Epidermophyton and Trichophyton. There are about 40 species in these three genera.." [1]

'Dermatophytoses are superficial fungal infections caused by dermatophytes affecting the skin, hair and/or nails. They are also termed as tinea infections. Dermatophytes are filamentous fungi that invade and feed on keratinized tissue like skin, hair and nails, causing an infection." [2]

'Topical anti-fungal therapy forms the mainstay of treatment in localized and naive dermatophytic infections. Topical anti-fungal agents are recommended for dermatophytoses affecting skin and presenting as localized infections. Systemic drugs are indicated for more extensive infections." [2]

"In addition to causing symptomatic infections with different severity degrees, dermatophytes also colonize 30%–70% of the human population without causing clinical disease, thus these keratin parasites could be considered as a component of the human microbiota. Strikingly, the presence of dermatophyte in the skin, either in commensal or pathogenic relationship with susceptible hosts, has been related to asthma, allergy or eczematous skin." [3]

"Successful treatment of these conditions depends first on accurate diagnosis, which is often quickly accomplished with a KOH examination." [4]

"Diagnosis can be confirmed by direct microscopic examination with a potassium hydroxide preparation or by culture with the dermatophyte test medium." [5]

"Dermatophyte infections can be readily diagnosed based on the history, physical examination, and potassium hydroxide (KOH) microscopy. Diagnosis occasionally requires Wood's lamp examination and fungal culture or histologic examination." [6]

"Several compounds present in plants have been shown to have positive effects on skin health as well as photoprotective properties. It has been shown that several classes of secondary metabolites, such as alkaloids, carotenoids and phenolic compounds, provide protection against UVR damage in the skin. These compounds can absorb UVR, block it and stop the mechanisms by which UVR damages the skin. Mexican plant biodiversity is a valuable source of secondary metabolites with photoprotective effects. Several Mexican plants produce unique molecules or mixtures with significant antioxidant and photoprotection properties. Due to their outstanding mechanisms of action, crude plant extracts, isolated compounds from plants or mixtures could all be potential ingredients in a new generation of sunscreens. In addition to their strong antioxidant and photoprotective properties, they also prevent photoaging and skin cancers. Furthermore, most of them have little to no side effects, making them a safe option for sunscreens."

  3. If you noted the statement in the abstract above which is reproduced for you here:

"A still unanswered question is whether improper formulations could also prove to be counterproductive in other types of sensitive skin, such as rosacea."

It is interesting to note a related abstract on the "clinical evidence about objective advantages of skincare routine remains limited despite advertising often claims benefits" and engaging in clinical tests on the skin using tools to collect data on this subject. Read more

The above report mentions that "clinical evidence about objective advantages of skincare routine remains limited despite advertising often claims benefits." Two of the authors of the paper are affiliated with Nanovex Biotechnologies, Asturias, Spain which according to its website "works in the design and development of different nanovesicles  to encapsulate different compounds.' The other two authors of the paper are associated with Clinica Dermatologica Internacional, Madrid, Spain

Wouldn't it be novel for the RRDi to independently sponsor a paper like this to evaluate skincare routines using similar equipment conducted by independent clinicians that are not affiliated with the skin industry?  Would you help in sponsoring such a study?  If enough members of the RRDi got together and decided this is what needs to be done it would take about $10K. The RRDi has currently 1600 plus members which would mean that each member would need to contribute $6.25 (less than a meal at a fast food chain). Can you see how a non profit organization has power if the members simply got together and decided to do something. What about you?  Can you find the reply to this post button and make a comment about this?

  5. Just an update on our financial situation. Since Invision Community has raised the price of hosting our website on their servers from $30/month to $49/month we won't be able to keep the website going in about a year. If you appreciate all the videos and content on our website, we rely totally on the public for donations since we have appealed to the skin industry for donations which hasn't worked. We have appealed on our website for our members who number now over 1600 plus and we rarely if ever get donations from a member, we will simply have to close down the website if we do not receive donations to cover our expenses, particularly our hosting fee for the website. No one at the RRDi staff receives a dime since all are volunteer. Our funds are low and we are very transparent when it comes to our financial situation. If you have any questions or concerns why not reply to this thread as a guest and post?

  6. "The digital divide refers to the gap between those who benefit from the Digital Age and those who do not.[1][2] People without access to the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICTs) are put at a socio-economic disadvantage, as they are unable or less able to obtain digital information, shop online, participate democratically, or learn and offer skills. This resulted in programs to give computers and related services to people without access" [1]

  7. The RRDi has an official list of famous rosaceans which you can view here:

    https://irosacea.org/famous/

If you know any of these famous rosaceans it would be appreciated if you could contact the one you know and ask if this famous rosacean would volunteer to serve on the RRDi board of directors. Wouldn't it be incredible if a famous rosacean supports the RRDi?

If you know of a famous rosacean that we have not included on our official famous rosacean list please just find the reply to this topic button and type in the name and the reference on the internet that substantiates this famous person has rosacea and we will be happy to add your famous rosacean to our list once we have confirmed your nomination that this is absolutely true. Chronic Mucocutaneous Candidiasis (CMC) has been associated with "Rosacea-Like Demodicosis" in at least one paper.

CMC is "is an immune disorder of T cells, it is characterized by chronic infections with Candida that are limited to mucosal surfaces, skin, and nails.  It can also be associated with other types of infections, such as human papilloma virus. An association with chromosome 2 has been identified." [1]

"Heterozygous missense STAT1 mutations leading to a gain of function (GOF) are the most frequent genetic cause of chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis (CMC). We describe the case of a patient presenting a new GOF mutation of STAT1 with the clinical symptoms of CMC, recurrent pneumonia, and persistent central erythema with papulopustules with ocular involvement related to rosacea-like demodicosis.' This extended mask wear can lead to prolonged cutaneous occlusion and contact with sensitizing chemicals. As a result, several dermatoses have been observed with facial mask use, including, irritant contact dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, flare of rosacea, and contact urticaria. A previous study found that skin adverse effects, including itching, rash, and acne, were common with N95 respirator use but not with surgical mask use."

  11. The financial situation of the RRDi is posted on our website at the following url:

    https://irosacea.org/financial

We are transparent with our expenses so the public can see how we spend every dollar. We have made special efforts to reduce our expenses to the bare minimum. Register our domains, web hosting, our post office box, and registration fee for being a non profit organization are our main expanses. We operate on a shoe string budget since we totally rely on the public for donations to keep going. If you  appreciate the rosacea content on our website we would appreciate your contributing to help us pay our bills. No individual on the RRDi staff makes a dime off of this non profit and everyone is a volunteer. You can rest assured that our non profit organization for rosacea does not use the donations to profit personally in any way.

If you have any questions or concerns about our financial situation, please find the reply to this topic button on your device and post. You don't have to register to post and guests are welcome to post. We encourage guests to post.

If the 1600 plus members of the RRDi would each donate one dollar a year that would keep our non profit organization for rosacea going for over a year! That is less than a cup of coffee. Do you appreciate the RRDi and want to help keep our non profit grassroots organization for rosacea going? Donate a dollar, please.

  12. Every year at the end of the year and the first part of January we have noted an increase in rosacea cases that correspond to an increase in sugar and alcohol consumed during the holidays at the end of December. This is because sugar and alcohol are both listed as rosacea triggers. Alcohol has been listed as a rosacea trigger for many years. The RRDi is the only non profit organization to list sugar/carbohydrate as a rosacea trigger. Read the official RRDi rosacea trigger list.

"Sugar by itself furnishes energy, and that’s about it. In that sense, sugar is like alcohol. It’s got calories, but it’s not nutrition. There’s no biochemical reaction that requires it. And at high doses, alcohol can fry your liver. Same with sugar." [1]

Sugar may trigger your rosacea, just as alcohol may trigger your rosacea.

The end of the year holidays furnishes motivation for increasing sugar/carbohydrate and alcohol which in turn may increase your rosacea flareups. If you have any questions or comments please find the REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button.

If you have been following the RRDi Guest Forum you probably have noticed little or sparse activity from guests. Actually there is a great deal of activity with spammers/trollers trying to promote their nefarious wares (against our rules), however, we moderate every post and don't allow any such posts including inappropriate links, etc, since such guest posts violate our rules which guests must adhere to. Please notice rules 1 and 3. We could use some volunteer moderators if you have the volunteer spirit. If you do, why not post as a guest in this thread an appropriate post on rosacea and your desire to volunteer as a moderator which shows you do have the volunteer spirit and want to help other rosacea sufferers, rosaceans. The RRDi is not setup to promote the nefarious wares of guests. Guests are NOT allowed to post about rosacea or ask questions about rosacea since the end of June 2022 because only spammers or trollers post and we are sick and tired of deleting all these type of posts, especially those in Russian. RRDi Registered Members can also post in the guest forum. Remember that no one is paid here at the RRDi and everyone is a volunteer member. If you want to volunteer read this page. Volunteers who actually volunteer to post, we waive the subscription fee.

It is available as an oral formulation to treat inflammatory lesions of moderate to severe non-nodular acne vulgaris. The main advantage of this new tetracycline is a higher selective activity against Cutinebacterium acnes comparative to older tetracyclines (doxycycline and minocycline) used in acne therapy. Due to this selectivity, the probability of developing antibiotic resistance is lower than minocycline and doxycycline."

"Melatonin is a hormone primarily released by the pineal gland at night, and has long been associated with control of the sleep–wake cycle." [1] Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) "is produced by various tissues in the body, although the major source is the pineal gland in the brain. Melatonin is produced naturally from the amino acid tryptophan, by the pineal gland at night-time." [2] "Melatonin dietary supplements can be made from animals or microorganisms, but most often they’re made synthetically." [3]

"Commercial melatonin production is predominantly performed by complex chemical synthesis." [4]

"Moreover studies suggest that the melatonin hormone is also an effective cancer inhibitor, can be beneficial in treating neurodegenerative diseases, and is useful to fight depression and anxiety. The first commercially available melatonin was produced via extraction of pineal glands of animals. However, one of the biggest drawbacks of the extraction process is the danger of viral contamination of the animal tissue. Therefore, melatonin is typically chemically synthesized, requiring toxic solvents and catalysts, albeit that all of these solvents and chemical intermediates are abundantly available...For recombinant melatonin production, we chose budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae as the host, since the product is intended for food supplement and medical applications. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on heterologous production of melatonin from glucose." [4]

"Some of the products are labeled "natural" melatonin and are reputed to contain actual extracts of the pineal gland. You should avoid these products. If the pills contain actual animal tissue, they may be contaminated with viruses or proteins which may be dangerous. You should buy synthetic melatonin. The synthetic melatonin is made from pharmaceutical grade ingredients and is molecularly identical to the melatonin you produce in your own body." [5]

"The origins, purity and the relatively low risk of contamination in plant melatonin have opened the door to its use as a nutraceutical compound, Spanish scientists suggest." [6]

One paper has stated, "Among the 113 predicted drugs, melatonin (MLT) was co-associated with both RORA and IFN-γ in AD and rosacea. Subsequently, network pharmacology analysis identified 19 pharmacological targets of MLT and demonstrated that MLT could help in treating AD/rosacea partly by modulating inflammatory and vascular signaling pathways. Finally, we verified the therapeutic role and mechanism of MLT on rosacea in vivo and in vitro. We found that MLT treatment significantly improved rosacea-like skin lesion by reducing keratinocyte-mediated inflammatory cytokine secretion and repressing the migration of HUVEC cells. In conclusion, this study contributes to common pathologies shared by rosacea and AD and identified MLT as an effective treatment strategy for rosacea and AD via regulating inflammation and angiogenesis."

  19. It is that time of year to review how the NRS spends its donations. In 2020 the NRS received $353,044. Expenses totaled $376,886, leaving revenue less expenses in the amount of -$20,842. How can the NRS do this?  They have a lot of assets from previous years! At the end of 2020 the NRS has a total of $103,552 in assets.

How much did the NRS spend on research grants? $30K. This means, that of the total amount in revenue (donations) about 8.5% was spent on rosacea research. That means that for every dollar donated to the NRS about 8.5 cents was spent on rosacea research

What did the NRS spend most of its money on?  Answer: on one independent contractor, Glendale Communications Group, Inc., mentioned in the previous post that is owned and run by Samuel Huff who serves on the board of directors of the NRS and is a key staff member. How much did the NRS spend? Answer: $219,523 which is 62% of the revenue received in 2020.

We have been reporting this to the public for many, many years, and rosacea sufferers love the way the NRS spends its donations and keep supporting this arrangement which is really nice for Samuel and Andrew Huff who own Glendale Communications Group, Inc. That is a nice way for the Huffs to end 2020. You might wonder why we don't report the Form 990 for 2021, which is released by the NRS towards the end of 2022, so stick around and come back then to see how the NRS spends its 2021 revenue. We are the lone watchdog on how the NRS spends its donations.

Also if you want to review the Form 990 for 2020 you simply have to scroll up the previous post and open the pdf and read it for yourself.

For a spreadsheet of all the years reviewedclick here

  20. In 2021 the NRS has announced a change in its executive director, from Samuel Huff. The new executive director is Andrew Huff. Here is a screenshot:

    AndrewHuff.png

It is interesting that Andrew Huff also serves as vice president of Glendale Communications Group which according to the blurb above "provides infrastructure and personnel fo the NRS program services at no cost to its members." Whether the members are charged or not, the fact remains that in 2020, according to the Form 990 provided by the NRS to the public, Glendale Communications Group, Inc., received $219,523 in compensation as an independent contractor for the NRS which amounts to 62% of the total revenue received in 2020. In addition to this, Form 990 indicates Andrew Huff received $61,216 in reportable compensation from related organizations while at the same time Samuel Huff received $50,562 as 'Director Emeritus'. Read the Form 990 for yourself:
